Gen. Katumba Wamala: Uganda mission in Somalia is no longer sustainable
|The Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Katumba Wamala says the mission is Somalia is no longer sustainable as the UN confirms it will not compensate the Ugandan government for its military helicopters that crashed on Mount Kenya in August 2012 .
In his submission to the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, Gen. Katumba Wamala informed the committee that the UPDF has received an official communication from the United Nations indicating that they will not compensate Uganda for three military choppers that crashed on Mt Kenya on their way to Somalia. The reason advanced by UN is that the three helicopters were not yet in the mission area.
Wamala also revealed that it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the UPDF in Somalia after the European Union cut its budget to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) by 20% in January.
