Somalia: PM Declares Candidacy in Presidential Elections
|Somali Prime Minister has declared his candidacy in the upcoming Presidential elections in Somalia. Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke announced his interest in the top office in horn of African state in the highly fortified Presidential Palace on Monday.
Sharmarke whose father is one of the founders of the country joins list of more than 50 candidates including the incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and former ambassador to Somalia.
He promised stability, economic progress and reconstruction if elected to the highly contested office.
Sharmarke served as Prime Minister in transitional government of President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed before retaining his position two years ago.
He was born in Somalia but partially worked and educated in Canada.
